We helped Spotify pair and integrate a Japanese typeface that works alongside Spotify Mix, Spotify's new and custom brand typeface.

Snapshot

A brand typeface is a system, not a font file — and in Japan, it’s a system that needs a second script.

Client: Spotify · What it is: selection and integration of a Japanese typeface to pair with Spotify Mix · Selected: Tazugane Gothic · Scope: candidate evaluation, licensing facilitation, and a practical adoption guide · Outcome: typography that feels local, playful, and unmistakably Spotify.

Typography is fun!

The business situation

When Spotify introduced Spotify Mix, its custom brand typeface, the Japanese market needed a partner script that could carry the same rhythm, clarity, and flexibility across thousands of touchpoints — with licensing clear enough that teams could actually use it, not just admire it.

After font-speed-dating our way through a lineup of promising candidates, we matched Mix with Tazugane Gothic — warm, human, and perfectly in sync. Making it official meant facilitating the licensing and writing the adoption guide, because a typeface pairing only becomes a brand system once every team can apply it without guessing.
