Running a Trust-Based Global Brand Natively in Japan

How Rare Standard became the embedded brand engine for a European marketplace in Japan: a Japanese voice and type system, plus the production to run it, on retainer.

Smartphone components disassembled for refurbishment

A fast-scaling European marketplace for refurbished technology was expanding into Japan with a strong global brand and voice that didn’t yet read as native Japanese, and no local brand or production infrastructure. We became its embedded brand engine on retainer. First the foundation: a localized tone of voice and a Japanese typography system. Then the ongoing operation, from monthly campaign work to corporate-site and impact-report localization, a physical Harajuku pop-up, brand guardianship, and brand tooling. Because one partner already holds the brand system, a brief becomes on-brand work fast, and the brand reads Japanese-first. That matters double for a company whose promise is trust in refurbished.

Snapshot

A strong global brand and voice that didn’t yet behave like a Japanese brand, in a market where trust is the entire proposition.

Industry: circular-economy marketplace (refurbished technology) · Market: Japan (European brand, local operation) · Engagement: embedded retainer, since 2024 · Scope: Japanese tone of voice, typography system, monthly campaign production, corporate-site and impact-report localization, Harajuku pop-up, guardianship, brand tooling · Signal of speed: a full pop-up delivered in under 5 days from brief approval.

The business situation

Entering Japan, the company had brand strategy and a global voice, but nothing built for how the brand needed to read, sound, and operate in Japanese, and no local team or studio to run a continuous flow of market work. Every asset risked feeling translated rather than native, in a market where a trust-based proposition (“refurbished is as good as new”) lives or dies on how credible the brand feels locally.

The requests were for assets: banners, pages, a pop-up. The real need was an operating capability, a Japanese brand system plus a partner who holds it, so the company could produce continuously without rebuilding the brand each time or standing up an in-house studio. For a market entrant, the foundation of voice, type, and system has to come first, or every later asset compounds the drift.
